When my boys were younger, we’d peruse the samples at Costco and often come home with something new to us that we’d tasted in the store. One afternoon, my boys approached a woman tending the stand to request a taste. Children are not allowed to sample unless with a parent/guardian who gives permission. I was in close enough proximity to give 'permission for the taste' with a thumbs-up.

She looked at me and smiled, then she looked at my kids. One is white, one is Black. She cocked her head to the side, like a puppy trying to figure out a command. Cherub #2 read her instantly and said, "That's my mom. I came out of a different belly."

Genius!

Nine words uttered by a 5-year-old instantly changed the scenario. The Black woman’s mouth fell open, then she guffawed, saying he'd just made her day 1,000 times better. She gave both of my boys two samples to taste.

That’s my mom. I came out of a different belly.

That’s the beautiful truth.
